Evaluation of Unit

Overall I have found this project to be very interesting, and I feel that I have grown a lot in terms of my way of thinking and developing ideas, and my attitude to work in general as I usually put it off until last minute but this unit I have pushed myself to complete tasks when they are set and even do additional research to help push my ideas along. I really tried to focus on time management as this is something that I struggle with a lot and although I did get a little behind at times overall I managed to stay up to date and this really reduced the amount of stress I have experienced this term. I did struggle a little with the amount of time we were given to come up with a design for our contemporary character verses the amount of time we had to prepare for our historical character, and I do feel that this hindered my design a little but I am still happy with the outcome of all of my designs and shoots. I practiced a lot for my designs and really tried to ensure that I had all the techniques down before the assessments or shoots which was really helpful as I didn’t experience any mishaps in the shoot preparation. I feel that I could have used more sources of inspiration in this unit than I did, and I could have explored different mediums for art and inspiration. I am slowly learning to use the sketch blog like a sketch book and not only put completed final images on there, but images of all practices, sketches, doodles and ideas. After looking at my contemporary character images I feel that I could have been a bit more experimental and artistic with the make up, and I will bear this in mind for future designs and ideas, as I feel that the make up I created for Sally Bowles was quite a standard make up look with added glitter. I really enjoyed looking at and learning about 1920’s and 30’s, and have got really interested in the club culture side of the unit especially Michael Alig and his friends. The alternative club scene is something which really interests me as I really love the message of people being different but unified in their difference and alternative style and personalities, and I think some beautifully creative looks are featured in this scene. I especially liked how I could notice links between the club kid culture and Weimar Berlin with the underground clubs and the obsession with glamour and being different. I am really happy with how my partner executed my design in the assessment as it came out just how I wanted it, and I feel that I created my partners design as she wanted it and to the best of my ability. Next unit I will take what I have learned forward and really focus on looking and experimenting with art, photography and other sources of inspiration to push my work further.

Black and White Photography

In our seminar we were discussing photography and Weimar Berlin to consider different ways in which we can find inspiration and get our creative juices flowing.
We began by looking at contemporary images which represent Weimar Berlin in one way or another from this site, and then discussed how black and white photography can bring out a different mood to colour photography.
Henri Cartier Bresson was mentioned in the beginning of this lesson, so he was in the forefront of my mind as I have researched him before for my a level photography course, and loved his work with the decisive moment. We had 1 hour to go around Southampton and take images in black and white which we felt represented a contemporary Weimar Berlin, and were told to think about composition, faded glamour, our throwaway society and "ordinary decadence made divine through the lens". We then presented three of our images to the class, and here are mine.

In the image above I definitely had the decisive moment in my mind. I liked the composition of this image but decided it needed some movement in it, or something to draw the eye in. I waited for a train to pass and took a few images, this being my favourite.

This image is my favourite in terms of showing our throwaway society; the furniture and rubbish outside the back of a bar or club which is probably perfectly good and reusable materials has just been left outside to be collected by the bin men.

Below are some more images from this task.

Sally Bowles- Final Shoot

Here are my hair and face charts for my Sally Bowles character.

Here are my final images for my shoot. I wanted my model to look carefree and like he was having a good time. The top two are my favourite images from the shoot as they put across the idea that Sally is carefree and flirtatious, always smiling. The last image shows a more playful side.
Overall I am happy with how the images turned out. I did struggle with putting the glitter in the hair as I ran out part way through which was a shame, but I manages to get some on there! I tried to take away most of the shine of the synthetic wig by spraying it with dry shampoo which I think was quite successful as it looks more like a natural shine in these images.

Grayson Perry

Grayson Perry is an English artist who works mainly on ceramics, using them to explore social and cultural norms, and to challenge them. To become more familiar with his work and way of thinking I watched a 3 part series on Channel 4 titled Grayson Perry: Who Are You? This series explores identity and personality in a very critical way, and shows him meeting with a variety of people to look at gender, fame, religion and identity. He specifically looked for people going through a crossroads or a crisis in identity, and explored how he could show this in his portraits which were then put on show in the National Portrait Gallery. In the introduction to the program, he describes artists as "part psychologist, part detective" when they are creating portraits, which really shows how he feels portraits should be made: showing much more than a photograph simply can.

"Our most beautiful and complex artwork that we can make is our identity" Greyson Perry

Ansett, R, (2013), Grayson Perry [ONLINE]. Available at: http://www.npg.org.uk/assets/microsites/perry/images/Perry_rotator_cropped.jpg [Accessed 03 December 14].
Greyson considers himself a transvestite and dresses as his alter ego Claire. He talks openly about how being a transvestite goes much further than just wearing a dress and putting on make up, and also discusses how his cross dressing began at a very young age. After looking at my Sally Bowles designs and the images of Claire, I can see some similarities in their style and appearance which I think goes very well alongside my ideas of androgyny.
